There are more than a couple places within an hour or so drive that are upscale public courses that assumning you play 30-40 times, would be cheaper than a 5k membership, especially if you take advantage of discount cards (like @ the Crystal Springs resorts) or the twilight rates. The issue with golfing in the NY/NJ area (at least for me) is availability of tee times and relative cost.
